THE PATH THAT SHAPED MY PURPOSE

WHY MORE THAN COUNSELING EXISTS

When I was in sixth grade, one of my teachers asked us to describe ourselves.

I wrote three simple words.

I am human.

At the time, I wasn’t trying to be profound.

I simply knew that before I was a girl, before I was Hispanic, before I belonged to any group or identity, I was human.

Looking back, I realize those three words quietly became the question that has guided my life ever since.

What does it mean to be human?

Life didn’t answer that question all at once.

It unfolded through relationships, through classrooms, through counseling rooms, through organizations, through conversations with people whose lives challenged what I thought I understood about human behavior.

With every experience, my perspective expanded, not only of others, but of myself. Over time, certainty became less compelling than curiosity. What began as three simple words gradually became the lens through which I understand what it means to be human.

Years before opening my practice, I created a folder on my computer called The Green Room. Inside was a vision.

A place where different approaches to wellbeing could exist together.

For years, I thought I was trying to build that place. Looking back, I realized the vision wasn’t just becoming a place, it was becoming part of me.

That journey became the natural expression of More Than Counseling.

I believe every human being is more than the story they currently believe about themselves.

The question that began in a sixth-grade classroom continues to guide my work today.

Whether I’m sitting with an individual, supporting a leadership team, teaching professionals, or partnering with an organization, I continue returning to the same belief:

Meaningful transformation begins with reflection.

Curiosity expands what reflection reveals.

Understanding deepens how we relate to ourselves and one another.

Honoring our shared humanity creates the conditions for people, relationships, organizations, and communities to flourish.

That is why More Than Counseling exists.
